ELEMENTS OF THE PAINTING:

Menorah

The Hebrew word menorah means “lampstand.” The King James Version of the Bible translates it as “candlestick.”

The original menorah was made for the tabernacle in the wilderness. It was made of solid gold and placed opposite the table of shewbread (see Exodus 25:31–37; 37:17–24). It had seven oil lamps that were level with each other—a central stem with three branches curving upward on either side. It burned only pure olive oil (see Exodus 27:20). The wicks had to be saturated with oil and regularly trimmed in order to burn brightly.

An almond motif was used in its design, including almond-shaped bowls with almond blossoms.

Hanukkah

The Second Temple was cleansed and the Temple menorah lit with only one day's worth of pure olive oil, yet it miraculously burned for eight days

Each night throughout the eight-day holiday, a candle or an oil lamp is lit to 'advertise' the miracle.

Hanukkah lights should usually burn for at least half an hour after it gets dark.

The reason for the Hanukkah lights is not for the "lighting of the house within", but rather for the "illumination of the house without", so that passersby should see it and be reminded of the holiday's miracle (i.e. that the sole cruse of pure oil found which held enough oil to burn for one night actually burned for eight nights). Accordingly, lamps are set up at a prominent window or near the door leading to the street.

Darkness

If light symbolizes God, darkness connotes everything that is anti-God: the wicked (Prov 2:13-14 ; 1 Thess 5:4-7), judgment (Exodus 10:21 ; Matt 25:30), and death (Psalm 88:12 )

Oil

The biblical significance of oil represents the Holy Spirit, God's blessings, and consecration for holy purposes.

The oil for the Menorah was pure, pressed olive oil, symbolizing purity, ultimately foreshadowing Christ as the ultimate Light and Anointed One. 

Fire

God's holy presence, power, and glory (like the burning bush or pillar of fire), His purifying and refining work (like refiner's fire or Pentecost's tongues of fire)

Light

Light symbolizes God's presence, holiness, truth, righteousness, and salvation, contrasting with darkness, which represents sin, evil, and ignorance; Jesus declares Himself the "light of the world," bringing spiritual illumination, while believers are called to "shine as lights" by reflecting God's goodness and truth.

Isaiah 42:6–7

I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness;
     I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
     a light for the nations,
to open the eyes that are blind,
     to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.

COLOURS:

Gold

In the Old Testament, we see God instructing the Israelites to build many things in pure (24-karat) gold: the ark (Exodus 25:10-22), the menorah (Exodus 25:31-35), and so on. Gold represents God's holiness.

The gold of the Menorah in the Bible symbolizes divine purity, holiness, royalty, and incorruptibility, reflecting God's presence, perfection, and the light of His truth, with its pure gold construction pointing to the perfect nature of God and Christ, and its seven branches representing completeness and the sevenfold Spirit of God. It's a divine pattern for Israel to be a light to the nations, a beacon of hope shining God's glory. 

Blue

Holy Spirit, God's heavenly presence, royalty, holiness, and obedience, often linked to the vast sky and precious sapphire stones seen under God's feet. It was used for priestly garments and the blue cord on tassels (tzitzit) as a reminder of God's commandments, connecting humanity to the divine and representing God's eternal covenant, truth, and grace.

Heaven, divine revelation, Holy Spirit, authority (Exodus 28:31, Ezekiel 1:26).  

White

Purity that dispels darkness, righteousness, holiness, Bride of Christ, victory, angels, saints (Matthew 28:3, Revelation 19:14).
